Toothache Relief

A toothache that keeps you awake, throbs or gets worse with hot and cold usually means the nerve is inflamed or infected. We find the cause with an examination and X-ray and treat it the same day – a filling, a root canal to save the tooth, or an extraction if it cannot be saved – so you leave without pain.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Chips and fractures range from a cosmetic edge to a crack into the nerve. Small chips are smoothed or rebuilt with white composite in one visit; deeper breaks may need a root canal and a crown. Keep any broken piece, rinse with warm water and call us – early treatment protects the tooth.

Knocked-Out Tooth

An adult tooth that is knocked out can often be saved if it is replanted within an hour. Hold it by the crown, not the root, rinse gently, and either place it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Call us straight away – we prioritise knocked-out teeth for immediate care.

Woman with Dental Swelling

Dental Abscess & Swelling

A swollen face or gum, a bad taste, fever or pain when biting are signs of an abscess – an infection that will not clear on its own. We drain the infection, treat the tooth and, where needed, prescribe antibiotics. Swelling that affects breathing or swallowing is a medical emergency: go to A&E.

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown exposes the tooth to sensitivity and further damage. Keep the crown if you have it, avoid chewing on that side and call us – in most cases we can re-cement or replace it the same day.

Wisdom Tooth Pain

Pain, swelling and difficulty opening the mouth at the back of the jaw usually point to an infected or impacted wisdom tooth. We assess it the same day and can remove the tooth in-house, with sedation if you wish.

Elizabeth was efficient and friendly on Reception and Mr Kim was particularly gentle in dealing with our son. Treatment given and lots of advice and instruction. Couldn't have asked for more. What an Emergency Visit Costs

An emergency examination is €75 and includes the assessment, however any X-rays needed to diagnose the problem cost extra. We tell you the cost of treatment before we start; where possible we treat you in the same visit. Extractions, root canal treatment and crowns are quoted after the examination (see our Fees page). Payment plans are available for larger treatments.

What to Do Before You Arrive

While you wait to be seen, these first steps can ease pain and protect the tooth. If you are not sure what to do, call us on +353 1 283 1000 and we will talk you through it.

  • Toothache: rinse with warm salt water, floss gently to remove any trapped food and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the pack. Do not put aspirin on the gum. More on stopping toothache pain.
  • Broken or chipped tooth: rinse your mouth, keep any pieces in a clean container and hold a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling. What to do with a broken tooth.
  • Knocked-out adult tooth: pick it up by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk – do not scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk or inside your cheek, and call us straight away: the first hour matters most.
  • Swelling or abscess: hold a cold compress to the outside of your face and call us. If swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to A&E immediately.
  • Lost filling or crown: keep the crown safe and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on that side; a temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth until your appointment.
  • Bleeding after an extraction: bite firmly on clean, damp gauze for 20–30 minutes and avoid rinsing, smoking or hot drinks.

Emergency Dental Extraction in Stillorgan, Dublin

Sometimes a tooth is too damaged by infection, trauma or decay to be saved, and an emergency dental extraction is the safest way to stop pain and prevent the problem spreading. At our Stillorgan, Dublin clinic, our emergency dentist team will always try to save the tooth first – with a filling, root canal treatment or a crown – and only recommend extraction when it is the best option for your health.

If an extraction is needed, we can usually carry it out on the same day, under local anaesthetic, with sedation available for nervous patients. We explain the aftercare, what to expect while the area heals and your options for replacing the tooth later, such as a dental implant or bridge.
